Ukraine is ready to continue search and exhumation works within the framework of cooperation with Poland on complex historical issues, according to the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.

The first step in this direction was the recent exhumation work in the village of Puzhnyky in the Ternopil region.

At the same time, the Polish side has granted permission to carry out similar work in Poland itself, in the village of Jureczkowa. Ukraine expects the search to begin soon.

This concerns sensitive chapters of Ukrainian-Polish history involving the burial of victims of 20th-century conflicts.

In 1939, Polish servicemen were buried in the former village of Zboiska (now part of Lviv), and Ukraine has now officially allowed Poland to conduct exhumation work there.

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications also highlights examples of constructive cooperation, including the joint condemnation of vandalism on Monastyr Mountain and efforts to counter fake news regarding the cancellation of excavation permits.

"Shared memory and steps toward each other will unite our peoples in the name of a common European future," the Ministry emphasized.

Exhumation of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy

Poland has repeatedly raised the issue of exhuming the victims of the Volhynia tragedy — the mutual ethnic cleansings carried out by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Polish Home Army.

In January, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that agreements had been reached regarding the first exhumations of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy. This was later confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

It was previously reported that the exhumation of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy in Ukraine would begin in April. The work will be carried out in the Ternopil region.
