A performance by Russian violinist Vadim Repin in Budapest, at the opening of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra's season, has been canceled. Instead of the Russian musician, a Hungarian artist will take the prestigious stage, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Concert cancellation, MFA's reaction

The cancellation of the Russian artist's performance was made possible by efforts from the Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary. The event organizers completely replaced the key opening number of the season program.

The foreign ministry of Ukraine emphasized that representatives of the Russian Federation have no place on global stages.

"Russian culture is a culture of genocide and war crimes that should not have any place on international platforms," the MFA stated.

Diplomats assured that Ukraine will continue to work consistently toward the complete isolation of representatives of the Russian cultural sphere in the global industry.

About the venue

The concert was scheduled to take place at the Margitszigeti Színház, one of the most prestigious summer theater venues in Hungary and across Central and Eastern Europe.

Located in the heart of Budapest, the venue hosts more than 70 cultural events each summer as part of a major festival season, featuring opera, ballet, musicals, and classical and contemporary music performed by leading Hungarian and international artists.

Sanctions pressure on Russia

Recently, Ukraine imposed tough sanctions on ten major Russian telecom operators that support the Russian military and occupation administrations.

The targeted companies provide secure communication channels for Russian authorities, broadcast propaganda, and service infrastructure in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

At the same time, the European Union is preparing another major blow to the Russian economy and military. EU leaders have developed a new sanctions package that would ban Russian nationals from entering Europe and beyond.

The new EU sanctions are also expected to affect the Russian fishing industry for the first time, expand restrictions against the country's shadow oil fleet, and freeze the assets of about 170 additional individuals and entities.
