Ukraine forms contact group to develop unified war-ending strategy
Ukraine has already organized a new contact group. It includes several European countries that will develop a unified position on ending the war, stated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz ahead of negotiations, Ukrinform reports.
Merz opposed individual European peace initiatives concerning Ukraine. According to him, European countries must adopt a single position on ending the war.
"This is not just about the EU. I propose creating a Contact Group with Germany, France, Poland, and the United Kingdom - four major European and NATO countries - to exchange views (on ending the war - ed.) and, together with the US, develop a common vision. I think we should discuss how you perceive this idea,” Merz stated.
President Zelenskyy expressed support for the initiative.
“To be honest, we have already organized it (Contact Group - ed). The countries you mentioned are already involved. We also count on Denmark to represent the Nordic group. We count on all of them, but Denmark could specifically represent the Nordic team. We plan to hold such a meeting in December. You see, we already share many views,” Zelenskyy added.
Efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war
Amid Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, the issue of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia has been discussed more frequently.
Trump wants to have a special representative for Ukraine in his team. This position will be held by retired General Keith Kellogg.
As reported by CNN, Kellogg has worked out a peace plan for Ukraine, proposing a freeze on the war along the current frontline. He suggests that Ukraine would then reclaim occupied territories through diplomatic means.
