CNN reveals peace plan of Trump's special envoy for Ukraine
The future US special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, in his peace plan suggests freezing the front lines. He also reportedly advocates for pressuring Kyiv and Moscow to sit down at the negotiating table and lift sanctions against Russia, reports US broadcaster CNN.
The 80-year-old former National Security Advisor to Trump, Kellogg, who will take on the role of Special Representative for Ukraine in the new US administration, criticized the actions of the White House, accusing the current administration under Joe Biden of providing Ukraine with weapons for defense too late and insufficiently.
Keith Kellogg's position on the Russia-Ukraine war, US aid, and NATO membership
He states that more weapons should have been provided to Ukraine before and immediately after Russia's full-scale invasion so that the Ukrainian side could secure victory.
According to Kellogg, Trump's soft approach to Russian President Vladimir Putin would have allowed him to reach an agreement.
Kellogg says the US does not need to get involved in another conflict, and that its weapon supplies have been affected by assisting Ukraine, potentially leaving the US vulnerable to conflicts, such as with China over Taiwan.
Kellogg asserts that Ukraine's NATO membership is a very distant prospect. He believes that the previously proposed accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, as a symbol of solidarity, should be suspended indefinitely in exchange for a comprehensive peace agreement with verifiable security guarantees.
What does Keith Kellogg's peace plan entail
The plan primarily states that it should become the official US policy regarding a ceasefire and settlement through negotiations.
Kellogg's peace plan also indicates that future US aid, likely provided as a loan, will depend on negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
Additionally, the US would provide Ukraine with as much weaponry as necessary to defend itself and halt any further advance of Russian forces both before and after any peace agreement.
According to CNN, Kellogg advocates for freezing the front lines through a ceasefire and the establishment of a demilitarized zone.
"For agreeing to this, Russia would get limited sanctions relief, and full relief only when a peace deal is signed that is to Ukraine’s liking," the US special representative's view is reported by the broadcaster.
The plan also emphasizes that Ukraine would not be asked to forgo reclaiming its territories occupied by Russia, but Kyiv would have to pursue this goal solely through diplomatic means.
Kellogg acknowledges that this would require a future diplomatic breakthrough which probably will not occur before Putin leaves office.
"It is a bleak compromise for a bleak war. But it may not end it and instead open a new chapter where Western unity and support begins to crumble, and Putin edges, both at the negotiating table and at the front, closer towards his goals," reads the CNN report in reaction to the proposed peace plan.
Trump appoints Keith Kellogg as Special Representative for Ukraine
On November 27, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he had nominated retired General Keith Kellogg as Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia.
The following day, November 28, Kellogg assured that he intends to work tirelessly to achieve peace through strength.
Additionally, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Kyiv views Trump's decision to nominate Kellogg for the position of Special Envoy in Ukraine positively.
Various versions of an alleged peace plan by Trump for Ukraine have periodically appeared in the media. However, none of these have been confirmed as an actual initiative by Trump.
