Ukraine is negotiating not only the purchase of Patriot systems but also a wide range of other air defense solutions, according to Heorhii Tykhyi, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, speaking at a briefing.

Heorhii Tykhyi clarified that Ukraine is in talks to acquire multiple air defense systems, not just Patriot.

He pointed out that Europe has another system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles — the Italian-French SAMP/T. Although fewer in number compared to Patriot, these systems are available, and Ukraine is actively working with both Italy and France to secure additional units.

In addition to strategic systems, Ukraine is also working to acquire smaller but effective air defense assets. These include NASAMS, IRIS-T, ASPID, and portable MANPADS systems capable of targeting aerial threats, including Shahed-type drones.

Tykhyi emphasized that the effort goes far beyond just acquiring Patriot systems — it involves building a layered and resilient air defense architecture across Ukraine.

He also highlighted the priority of investing in drone interceptors. According to the Deputy Minister, Ukraine has developed a unique drone technology capable of detecting and destroying airborne targets, and the current focus is on scaling up production with international support.

Tykhyi concluded that Ukraine now faces two key objectives: expanding its defense capacity through partner resources and developing a domestic strategic air defense system.

Patriots for Ukraine

On July 9, US President Donald Trump confirmed that Ukraine had requested Patriot air defense systems from Washington. He stated that the US would consider the request but made no specific commitments.

Earlier, media reports had suggested that Trump might approve the transfer of an additional Patriot battery to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the United States is looking to discuss with NATO allies the possibility of providing Ukraine with Patriot systems. However, no country has yet agreed to part with the weaponry.

Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Germany is ready to fund two US-made Patriot systems for Ukraine, while Norway will finance one more.
