Ukraine establishes diplomatic relations with Somalia

Kyiv is interested in strengthening ties and presence in Africa. Ukraine has officially established diplomatic relations with Somalia, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reports.
"I signed relevant protocol with Somalia’s State Minister For Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar," he wrote.
According to him, this took place during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, where he had the opportunity to meet with colleagues, including from African countries. "Ukraine is interested in strengthening ties and presence," he added.
Sybiha said that Ukraine has been providing assistance to Somalia under the Grain from Ukraine program and is ready to continue to strengthen food security.
"We appreciate Somalia’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," the minister said.
Somalia
Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is the easternmost country in continental Africa. Somalia has an estimated population of 18.1 million people, of which 2.7 million live in the capital and largest city of Mogadishu.
Currently, the only legitimate authority in the country is the Federal Government of Somalia, which is recognized by the international community, but until recently, this government controlled only part of the capital, Mogadishu.
Much of Somalia's territory is still under the control of unrecognized state entities or self-governing territories.
Northern Somalia is controlled by the unrecognized state of the Republic of Somaliland, which unilaterally declared its independence in 1991.
Somalia is one of the least developed countries in the world, as evidenced by its ranking in terms of GDP per capita and its lowest ranking in the world in the Human Development Index.
The country has retained an informal economy, mainly based on livestock farming, remittances from Somalis working abroad, and telecommunications.
The country is a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, and the African Union.
