Ukraine convenes an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA. The meeting will discuss Russia's shelling of Ukraine's energy sector, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha says.

“Ukraine is convening an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on December 12 in response to Russian attacks on our critical energy infrastructure,” Sybiha says.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that Russian attacks on substations identified by the IAEA as important for nuclear safety pose a global threat.

Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP was on the verge of blackout three times in a month due to damage to external power lines connecting it to the Ukrainian power grid.

Russian latest attack on Ukrainian energy sector

Russian last large-scale attack on the Ukrainian energy sector took place on November 28. Back then, Russians fired 97 drones and more than 90 missiles at Ukraine.

Infrastructure facilities were damaged in Rivne, Lviv, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Volyn, Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Mykolaiv, and Vinnytsia regions.

Russian shelling led Ukrainian energy companies to tighten restrictions on electricity consumption. Scheduled blackouts are in effect in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that it was impossible to predict when the situation with electricity would stabilize.
