Ukraine asks Mexico to arrest Putin if he comes to presidential inauguration
Ukraine has called on Mexico to arrest Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin should he attend the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, scheduled for October 1, according to the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico.
The embassy expressed hope that the Mexican government is aware that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal who is subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of kidnapping and forcibly relocating Ukrainian children to Russia. Mexico, as a signatory to the Rome Statute, recognizes the jurisdiction of the ICC.
"In the meantime, we trust that the Mexican government will comply with the international arrest warrant under any circumstances, handing over the aforementioned individual to the UN judicial body in The Hague," the letter said.
Backstory
On August 7, Mexico invited Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to attend the inauguration of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.
Since the issuance of the arrest warrant in March 2023, Putin has refrained from traveling to countries that are signatories to the Rome Statute, as authorities in these nations are obligated to arrest him upon arrival.
Despite this, Putin continues to receive invitations to various events outside Russia, though he consistently declines, likely out of fear of being arrested.
Regarding travel, the Kremlin leader regularly visits Belarus, and in June, Putin made trips to North Korea and Vietnam.
