Mexico invites Putin to inauguration of new president
Mexico has invited Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin to the inauguration of newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum. It will take place on October 1, reports Reuters.
"Russia's invitation to take part in the inauguration of President Sheinbaum was sent to President Putin. The Russian President will decide whether he will participate in the ceremony himself or appoint another high-ranking official to do so on his behalf," a Mexican embassy spokesperson said.
Mexico's Foreign Ministry later told Reuters that the government had sent diplomatic notes to all countries with which it had relations, as well as international organizations of which it is a member, inviting them to Sheinbaum's inauguration.
Arrest warrant for Putin
In March 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of a war crime for illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Based on this, Mexico, as a signatory to the Rome Statute, should arrest Putin upon his arrival in the country.
Putin had previously wanted to take part in the BRICS summit, which took place in August 2023 in South Africa. At the last minute, South Africa, which even considered adopting a special bill to protect Putin from arrest through the ICC warrant, asked Putin not to attend the BRICS summit.
