Ukraine and the United Kingdom are working on solutions to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian skies, with anti-ballistic defense projects among the key priorities, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
The issue was discussed during a meeting between acting Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapatyi, and Chief of the Defence Staff of the UK Armed Forces Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton.
A major focus of the meeting was strengthening Ukraine's air defenses and expanding joint defense projects with international partners. Military officials discussed anti-ballistic projects where potential UK contributions are expected.
Ukraine is also seeking British support in supplying missiles for air defense systems, as well as Meteor missiles for Gripen fighter jets. These capabilities are seen as essential for countering Russian aircraft carrying guided aerial bombs.
The two sides also discussed the supply of counter-Shahed systems. This effort could be financed using proceeds generated from frozen Russian assets.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the country urgently needs additional missiles to defend against Russia's large-scale ballistic missile attacks.
Kyiv is currently negotiating with the United States to accelerate deliveries of missiles for Patriot air defense systems and to launch joint production of air defense equipment. Ukraine is also counting on Japan's support in establishing licensed production of Patriot systems.
