Ukraine and Germany may sign a security guarantee agreement in February
Ukraine and Germany may sign a security guarantee agreement as early as February. The draft document is already ready, according to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
According to preliminary data, the agreement is scheduled to be signed on February 16. The intergovernmental agreement may be finalized and signed during the Munich Security Conference.
"The planned agreement is to become part of a network of bilateral security agreements designed to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression while the country is not yet a NATO member. It was adopted on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius last July. The G-7 group was chosen as the basis of this structure," the statement said.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Ukraine is negotiating with a number of countries on security guarantees. In particular, this list includes the United States, Canada, Romania, France, Germany, and Italy.
On January 12, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in Kyiv on a working visit. In the Ukrainian capital, he signed a historic agreement on security cooperation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It has already entered into force and will be valid for 10 years.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris was finalizing negotiations with Ukraine on security guarantees.
