The UK has sent its troops to Israel to monitor the ceasefire in Gaza, brokered by US President Donald Trump, Politico reports.

The British forces will join a US-led multinational task force in Israel that oversees the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and coordinates humanitarian aid efforts.

A spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defense said that "a small number of UK planning officers," including a deputy commander with the rank of general, joined the operation.

"The UK continues to work with international partners to support the Gaza ceasefire to see where the UK can best contribute to the peace process," the spokesperson noted.

The Ministry of Defense added that the British deputy commander will lead efforts to outline the country's future contributions.

According to Politico, Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government supports the implementation of Trump's 20-point peace plan. The outlet reported that the UK could play a key role in stabilizing Gaza by helping monitor the situation and advising on the disarmament of Hamas, based on the Northern Ireland experience.

It is noted that there are no plans to deploy British troops into Gaza, and the officers will not be sent into combat zones.

Gaza ceasefire

On Monday, October 20, US Vice President JD Vance traveled to Israel for a series of meetings amid Trump administration efforts to maintain the fragile peace in the region.

US officials believe the next 30 days will be decisive for implementing President Donald Trump's peace deal.

Axios emphasized that the Gaza war ceasefire agreement represents a major diplomatic achievement for Trump. However, his administration believes the situation between Israel and Hamas remains so fragile that only strict oversight can preserve the peace.
