UK imposes sanctions on Iran in response to missile strike on Israel on October 1
The United Kingdom has imposed new sanctions on individuals and Iranian companies linked to the missile program. The sanctions are in response to Iran's attack on Israel on October 1 of this year, according to the UK government.
Sanctions have been imposed on the Iranian Space Agency, which is involved in developing space launch vehicle technology used in the development of ballistic missiles, as well as the Design Bureau (FPSDB), which designs and manufactures various power systems.
The sanctions list includes seven senior Iranian military officials, including the Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff and officials from the Air Force and two organizations involved in the development of ballistic and cruise missiles.
The list includes:
- Iranian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Abdolrahim Mousavi and his deputy Mohammad-Hossein Dadras;
- Commander of the Iranian Air Force Hamid Vahedi;
- Intelligence Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Mohammad Kazemi;
- Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces and Deputy Chief of Coordination of the Iranian Army Habibollah Sayyari;
- IRGC spokesperson Ali-Mohammad Naini;
- Chief Engineer of the Power Systems Design Bureau Houssein Pourfarzaneh.
Escalation in the Middle East
In the past month, the Israeli army has eliminated several leaders of Iran-backed Islamic groups. On July 31, IRGC leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, and on September 27, Israeli Air Force targeted and killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in the suburbs of Beirut.
In response, Iran fired 180 rockets at Israel, but the attack was ineffective. Netanyahu vowed to retaliate, considering strikes on Iran's oil and nuclear facilities. Biden is trying to dissuade Israel from such actions to avoid further escalation.
On October 1, Iran launched a missile strike on Israel, firing over 180 ballistic missiles. The attack was repelled by Israeli forces, together with US destroyers.
