The change of government in the United Kingdom will not affect the country’s foreign policy course, particularly its consistent support for Ukraine, stated Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy.
During the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, the official assured that there is no question of any change in foreign policy direction. According to him, London has supported Kyiv under all previous governments and will unquestionably continue to do so.
The United Kingdom also pledged an additional £290 million (around €340 million). These funds will be directed toward Ukraine’s reconstruction and strengthening its energy security.
In addition, the country vowed to increase sanctions pressure on the Russian economy and to take a tougher stance against the money used by Russia to finance the war.
Expectations from the NATO summit
Lammy expects allies to maintain positive momentum on Ukraine at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara on July 7-8. This follows a successful G7 summit in France, where leaders demonstrated transatlantic unity.
Deputy Prime Minister stressed that within the coming weeks, NATO would likely see the United States highlight how Europeans are ramping up their defense commitments and security expenditures across the continent.
The political situation in the UK sharply escalated after a crushing defeat for the Labour Party in local elections.
Following this, on June 22, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation. He said he acknowledges that he is not the best person to lead the Labour Party into the next election.
