U.S. to pressure Turkiye to comply with sanctions against Russia and Hamas
The U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson will visit Turkey next week to discuss Ankara's compliance with U.S. sanctions against Russia and Hamas, according to Bloomberg.
A senior U.S. Treasury official is said to meet with his Turkish counterparts and insist that Turkey comply with unilateral U.S. sanctions against a number of Russian organizations and Hamas financial activities.
Last month, the U.S. Treasury Department expanded the list of sanctioned individuals in Turkey, which it said were fronts for the Hamas group, which the United States and the European Union have designated as a terrorist organization.
Washington imposed sanctions on about a dozen Turkish firms and individuals for managing an investment portfolio on behalf of Hamas or helping Russia evade sanctions.
The United States has also warned a number of Turkish companies about possible sanctions that could disrupt their ties to the Western financial system.
Sanctions against Russia
The European Union has already approved 11 packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation. The restrictions include, for example, goods that can be used in the production of weapons. In particular, the sanctions include individuals and legal entities responsible for the invasion of Ukraine and helping to continue the war.
Currently, the EU is planning to agree on the 12th package of anti-Russian sanctions, which will include new lists of personal restrictions and export sanctions, in particular on diamonds.
The EU and the European Commission have already presented their proposals for the 12th package of sanctions against Russia to the EU Council.
