The United States Department of State has requested Congress to approve the sale of 45,000 tank shells to Israel, reports Reuters.

According to unnamed U.S. officials and a former American official, the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden aims to provide these 45,000 shells for Merkava tanks for use by Israel in its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

At the same time, journalists note that the request comes amid concerns about the use of American weapons in a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.

The U.S. has been a supporter of Israel It's worth recalling that the United States has supported Tel Aviv since the beginning of Israel's war with Hamas. They have deployed several aircraft carriers and thousands of soldiers off the coast of Israel in the Mediterranean Sea to prevent the intervention of other countries or groups in the conflict.

Additionally, the U.S. confirmed a month ago the shipment of two Iron Dome systems to Israel, necessary for the country's defense against rocket attacks by Hamas militants.

Israel continues its ground operation in the Gaza Strip since November. The military has successfully taken control of the northern part of the Palestinian enclave, including the largest city, Gaza.

Currently, the Israel Defense Forces are advancing to the south. They have already surrounded Khan Younis, the second-largest city in the Gaza Strip.
