The Russian Federation today, July 16, carried out an airstrike on the city of Dobropillia in the Donetsk region using an aerial bomb. Casualties have already been reported, with dozens injured and widespread destruction.

RBC-Ukraine reports on what is currently known about the airstrike on Dobropillia.

Key questions

  • The Russians dropped a FAB-500 bomb with a UMPC module on the center of Dobropillia;

  • One person has been confirmed dead, and dozens are injured;

  • The Avrora store was destroyed.

What the Russian forces used in the strike

The Russian army attacked the center of Dobropillia during rush hour. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the Russian military dropped a FAB-500 bomb with a UMPC module on the city center.

The FAB-500 is a 500-kilogram general-purpose aerial bomb with a high-explosive warhead, developed during the Soviet era. It is primarily used by the Russian Aerospace Forces. The original M-54 model was released in 1954. The bomb is unguided and compatible with most Soviet aircraft models.

According to preliminary data, the attack damaged 54 retail outlets, 304 apartments in 13 buildings, and 8 vehicles in the city. The full extent of the cynical enemy strike is still being assessed.

Casualties

According to Vadym Filashkin, Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, as of 7:55 p.m. Kyiv time, one person has been confirmed dead (earlier reports mentioned two). He also reported 21 people injured.

"The Russians once again deliberately struck a crowded area — a shopping center in the city center. This time, they used a 500-kilogram aerial bomb," Filashkin wrote.

It is likely that people still remain under the rubble — the search for survivors is ongoing.

Avrora store hit

According to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, the Russian forces attacked Dobropillia when most people were returning from work.

"The strike hit the area near the Avrora store. There are fatalities and many injured. Rescuers, medics, and military doctors are working on the scene — the local hospital cannot accommodate everyone," Lubinets added.
