Türkiye is not building 'wall': Ambassador explains Erdoğan's position on war in Ukraine

Ukraine feels Türkiye's support amid ongoing challenges, with Ankara remaining open to dialogue, said Ukrainian Ambassador to Türkiye Nariman Dzhelyal.
The diplomat noted that he had the opportunity to personally speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the first time during one of the visits by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to him, the meeting left a positive impression. "President Zelenskyy personally extended the invitation, and I reiterated it during my meeting with the Turkish president," Dzhelyal said.
He emphasized that there is a sense of support for Ukraine and a deep understanding of the situation from the Turkish authorities.
The ambassador also stated that public opinion in Türkiye regarding the war in Ukraine is not uniform, but a pro-Ukrainian sentiment is noticeable in the media and among government officials.
"I don't feel any kind of 'wall' or lack of understanding that some of my colleagues say they encounter in other countries. On the contrary, public opinion in Türkiye is diverse, but there's a noticeable pro-Ukrainian current — especially among journalists and government officials," Dzhelyal said.
Ukraine is preparing for a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. A key topic of the visit may be the ratification of the free trade agreement between the two countries.
This document is important both for strategic partnership and for a significant portion of Ukrainian business.
