Trump was out of line of sight for suspect who can't shoot - US Secret Service
The suspect in the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump did not have a direct line of sight on Trump from the location on the golf course where he was found. Additionally, the suspect had never fired a weapon, according to US Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe.
According to the Associated Press citing the head of the service, Ryan Routh reportedly had never fired a weapon.
The FBI also revealed that the suspect was the subject of a closed investigation in 2019 following reports of illegal possession of firearms.
Apparent second assassination attempt on Trump
On the evening of September 15, Trump’s campaign team stated that the former president was safe after gunshots were fired nearby. Media sources indicated that the shooting occurred near a golf club and was unrelated to Trump.
The FBI later described the incident as resembling an attempted assassination of former President Trump, according to AP.
The incident took place at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Secret Service agents assigned to protect Trump reportedly spotted an armed man and opened fire. The suspect was later apprehended in his vehicle and is currently in custody.
The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Routh, had a history of legal issues and was active on social media, particularly on political topics. According to AP, the man expressed support for Ukraine on social media and operated a website where he allegedly sought to raise funds and recruit volunteers for the conflict against Russia.
On September 16, the Federal Court in Florida issued the first charges against him.
No information has yet been provided regarding the possible motives of the suspect.
