Trump's office says there was shooting near him
In Florida, there was a shooting near US presidential candidate Donald Trump. Trump is now in a safe place, reports CNN.
On Sunday, Trump's campaign headquarters reportedly said that the former president was safe after shots were fired in his vicinity.
"President Trump is safe after shots were fired in his vicinity. No further details are available at this time," said Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung.
The former president was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. The course was immediately closed, according to a source familiar with the situation.
“Two people exchanged gunfire outside of Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach. The shooters were targeting each other, and the gunfire was not targeting Trump,” wrote American journalist Jonathan Lemire.
Meanwhile, the New York Post also writes that Trump was not in danger, the shooting took place in an area outside the club, which is known for its high crime rate.
The US Secret Service has launched an investigation
Anthony Guglielmi, the head of the US Secret Service's communications department, said that the service, together with the Palm Beach County Sheriff, is investigating the incident involving the former president. He noted that Trump is safe.
Donald Trump Jr. said the shooter was detained
Trump's son wrote on social media platform X that the shooter near his father's golf club had been detained. According to him, he had a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
Assassination attempt on Trump in July 2024
This event happened almost exactly two months after Thomas Matthew Crooks shot Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, wounding the former US president in the ear.
"I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening," Trump said of his injury.
