Sumy faces Shahed drone attack, explosions reported

In the early hours of Sunday, August 24, explosions were heard in the Ukrainian city of Sumy. The region was under attack by Russian Shahed strike drones, according to the Air Force and Suspilne.
The Air Force reported that around 02:00 Kyiv time, enemy strike drones were detected in the airspace over the Sumy region.
At 02:46, Suspilne reported explosions in the city, with additional blasts heard about 15 minutes later.
It should be noted that as of 03:30, there were no reports of casualties or damage.

According to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the consequences of the attacks on the city are being assessed.
At the same time, Artem Kobzar, acting mayor of Sumy, stated that some of the explosions heard in the city occurred outside the Sumy community.
Firefighting teams are operating in the city. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties or injuries.
On the evening of Saturday, August 23, the Russian army launched several groups of strike drones. Additionally, there was a warning of a possible ballistic strike. By 01:14 on August 24, the Air Force declared the threat from strike drones and ballistic missiles neutralized. However, new groups of drones are currently being detected in Ukrainian airspace.
Attacks on the Sumy region
On the night of August 18, Russian forces attacked the Sumy region, hitting residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
In the Shostka community, residential areas were affected: houses and outbuildings were damaged, and large fires broke out, which were later extinguished, with no casualties reported.
The shelling also struck Sumy State University, destroying one of its buildings; the fire was extinguished by morning. Additionally, other civilian objects in the region were hit.
The Sumy region is regularly subjected to attacks. On August 15, a kamikaze drone struck a market in central Sumy, and on August 10, a strike hit the Sumy Regional Military Administration building. In both cases, no casualties were reported.
