Trump unveils secret plan to arm Ukraine without dragging US into war

The Trump administration has reportedly found a way to arm Ukraine without direct weapons transfers — a strategy that could shift the battlefield balance, informs Аxios.
US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new approach to supporting Ukraine. Under the plan, Washington would supply weapons while maintaining a neutral status in the war.
The idea is for the US to sell arms to NATO allies, who would then transfer them to Ukraine.
How the new mechanism would work
According to Trump, weapons would first be delivered to NATO countries, which would then have the authority to decide independently what to send and to whom.
NATO would pay for the deliveries, allowing Washington to formally avoid direct involvement in the transfer of weapons to Ukraine.
Experts say the scheme allows the US to avoid direct responsibility while continuing to provide military support to Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
At the same time, the plan shows Trump is aware of the current realities. He no longer seems to believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin will leave Ukraine voluntarily. The move also reflects growing frustration within Trump’s team over Russia’s continued strikes on Ukrainian cities and civilians.
Political fallout and new challenges
The decision could spark debate within US domestic politics and among European allies. Still, despite pushback from some officials, the plan signals Washington’s willingness to keep supporting Ukraine even under difficult diplomatic conditions.
Trump also said he is disappointed in Russia and promised to make an important statement on Russia on Monday.
What's behind the White House shift on Ukraine
President Trump has grown increasingly critical of Russia's attacks on Ukraine. He recently claimed that up to 7,000 people are dying each week on both sides of the conflict.
Amidst that, media reports indicate that the Trump administration has already provided Ukraine with part of the military aid from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request list. The White House is reportedly preparing to send additional weapons to Kyiv, and Congress is planning to pass tough new sanctions against Russia.
