On Friday, May 1, US President Donald Trump informed Congress that the war with Iran is over, Politico reports.

The outlet notes that the US President is seeking to put an end to disputes over whether the conflict required congressional approval.

Politico obtained a letter in which the White House outlined its position. At the same time, the conflict in the Middle East has reached the 60-day legal deadline, under which military operations must cease if lawmakers do not authorize the use of force.

According to Trump, the ceasefire with Tehran effectively stops that clock.

"There has been no exchange of fire between the United States and Iran since April 7, 2026. The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated," the US President said.

Purpose of Trump’s message

The outlet notes that the message is intended to prevent an escalation of political tensions on Capitol Hill, where Trump faces the prospect of losing support from Republicans as the war drags on without a clear exit strategy.

However, the White House’s argument is unlikely to satisfy Democrats and some Republicans, who argue that the administration should wind down the campaign now that it has reached this threshold.

The letter also comes amid stalled negotiations and an ongoing military blockade of Iranian ports.

Earlier on Friday, before departing the White House for Florida, Trump told reporters that he had presented Iran with "a final proposal," but expressed pessimism about the chances of reaching a deal with the country’s "disjointed" government.

"They’ve made strides, but I’m not sure they’ll ever get there. I would say I’m not happy. … They want to make a deal, but I’m not satisfied," he said.

End of the US-Iran war

At the end of April 2026, Iran submitted a new proposal to the United States to end the war and restore security in the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Tehran proposed postponing discussions on nuclear issues to a later stage, focusing instead on achieving peace.

It later emerged that Iran had also handed Pakistan the text of a new peace plan for talks with the United States, where the main priority remains ending hostilities and achieving peace.

At the same time, Donald Trump stated that the United States has already achieved victory over Iran. However, he stressed that the nuclear threat from Tehran still remains, and that Washington intends to secure an even greater advantage.
