US President Donald Trump said it is necessary to reconsider his country’s membership in NATO, CNN reports.

The American leader, while criticizing allies for refusing to join the US operation against Iran, said that NATO membership is "certainly something that we should think about."

The President said that the United States was not obliged to help when Russia invaded Ukraine, effectively equating that war with the war in Iran.

"We help them, and they didn’t help us, and I think that’s a very bad thing for NATO," he added.

According to the US leader, no one wants Iran to obtain nuclear weapons, as the Iranian authorities are "absolutely crazy," "vicious," and "violent." Allies agree with this, but "don't want to help."

"We, as the United States, have to remember that, because we think it’s pretty shocking," Trump said.

He believes it is not good for a partnership when allies say, "what you’re doing is a great thing, but we’re not going to help."

Trump’s criticism

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said his country no longer needs the support of NATO allies.

According to him, the United States has destroyed Iran’s navy, air force, and nearly all key leaders.

This came after several NATO allies refused to send their warships to protect the Strait of Hormuz.
