In an interview with NBC News, US President Donald Trump stated that the White House may reduce tariffs imposed on Chinese goods, as trade between the US and China has essentially come to a halt due to them.

"At some point, I’m going to lower them because otherwise, you could never do business with them. And they want to do business very much," Trump said during the interview on the program Meet the Press.

At the same time, the US president praised recent statements by China regarding their willingness to negotiate tariffs, calling them "positive." However, he emphasized that any agreement between Washington and Beijing must be fair.

US-China tariff war

After returning to the White House in 2025, Trump initiated a new phase of the tariff war with China. In April, the US administration raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%.

In response, Beijing imposed a 125% tariff on American goods and restricted the export of rare earth metals, which are critical for the high-tech industries in the US.

The US tariffs affected not only China but also more than 180 countries. The rates ranged from 10% to 49%, depending on the country and specific groups of goods and raw materials. However, Trump later suspended these tariffs for 90 days and established a unified 10% rate for all countries.
