Trump statement on Ukraine signals possible shift away from war - Reuters

US President Donald Trump, with his statement about Ukraine's ability to regain territory with the help of the European Union, may have hinted that he is distancing himself from the issue of the war, Reuters reports.
Unnamed sources of the publication, commenting on Trump's loud statement about Ukraine, warned that the American leader may be signaling that it is now Europe's turn to help Ukraine.
"He seems to be saying his goodbyes, no? But that can change tomorrow. In any case, the cards are clear for us. We know what we should be doing," a Western European official told Reuters.
At the same time, a senior Eastern European diplomat noted that Trump's comments on Ukraine are aimed at showing that "he is starting to disengage by sending a message that it is Europe's question."
For his part, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul welcomed Trump's statement but noted that the time has come for Europe to act more decisively.
"We can achieve much more; not all European states have delivered what they promised Ukraine. We have to look at what other financial and military options we have," he added, emphasizing that it will not be easy for Europe to increase efforts in the field of security.
Meanwhile, Neil Melvin, Director of International Security at Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), believes that such a statement suggests Trump's understanding of Russia's war against Ukraine has evolved.
"He has acknowledged that the conflict is more complicated and he's clearly frustrated with Putin, so that I think it is perhaps a success for Ukrainian and European diplomacy that that explanation has got through," he clarified.
What Trump said
Yesterday, September 23, US President Donald Trump, after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wrote that Ukraine can regain all its territories temporarily occupied by Russian forces.
According to the American leader, such a scenario is possible with the support of the European Union countries.
Trump also emphasized that Russia's economy is in poor condition and now is "the time for Ukraine to act."
