Trump speaks with Putin and claims there is a 'good' chance to end war

US President Donald Trump announced a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. They had "very good and productive discussions," Trump wrote about this on his social media platform, Truth Social.
"There is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end," Trump wrote.
In addition, the US president claimed that thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are allegedly completely surrounded by Russian forces and are in a very vulnerable position. However, he did not clarify what exactly he meant.
"I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared," he wrote.
Updated. The White House clarified that Trump did not speak with Putin yesterday, he meant his special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
30-day ceasefire in Ukraine
During negotiations between Ukrainian and US delegations in Saudi Arabia, Washington proposed implementing a 30-day ceasefire along the front line, which Kyiv supported.
Earlier, similar talks took place between the US and Russia. It is known that an American delegation visited Moscow. However, shortly before the meeting, Putin’s aide, Yuriy Ushakov, stated that Moscow was not interested in temporary truces with Ukraine.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia had yet to provide a substantive response to the proposal for a 30-day truce. Kyiv is counting on US pressure to force Moscow to end the war.
Following the negotiations, Putin claimed that he "supports" the US idea of a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia but is concerned about "details."
Trump, for his part, expressed hope that Russia would "do the right thing."
