US President Donald Trump believes that a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin may take place, according to a briefing by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Leavitt was asked whether Trump still believes he can arrange negotiations between Zelenskyy and Putin.

"I think he thinks it's possible. And he would, of course, love to see that happen," the press secretary replied.

She clarified that negotiations are currently underway and plans are being developed for a meeting between the Russian and American delegations. The US delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. After that, another meeting between Trump and Putin is expected to take place.

"I don't think the President has closed the door on that at all," Leavitt added.

Zelenskyy–Putin meeting

Even before his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump aimed to organize a trilateral summit with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, Trump was unable to implement his plans — Putin continued to look for odd excuses and express doubts about the feasibility of a meeting with Zelenskyy.

For his part, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that he is ready to meet with Putin. Such talks, he said, are necessary because in Russia, the Kremlin leader makes all the decisions.

Today, October 16, Trump and Putin held another phone call. Following the conversation, the US leader said he had agreed to a meeting with the Russian leader in Budapest. A preparatory meeting between US and Russian officials will take place next week.
