The US wants to reach a new nuclear weapons deal with Russia and China. Talks are underway, US President Donald Trump said, according to Reuters.

Trump seeks nuclear deal

Trump said Washington was holding talks with Moscow and Beijing aimed at denuclearization among the countries with the world's largest nuclear arsenals.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia has the world's largest nuclear warhead stockpile, followed by the United States and China. The US has more deployed warheads than Russia.

Earlier, the US president said he expected China to "catch up" with the US within the next five years.

"The whole thing is a shame, because I'd love to denuclearize if possible, but we're actually talking to Russia about that, and ‌we're talking to China about that denuclearization," Trump said.

New START treaty

Trump's comments came several months after the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) expired in early 2026.

The New START treaty, signed in 2010, allowed for one extension, which former US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to for five years.

Any further extension would require an executive decision to voluntarily expand the treaty's limits.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that NATO spokesperson Allison Hart dismissed Russia's warnings to the Alliance regarding the Kaliningrad region, calling Moscow's statements "irresponsible nuclear rhetoric."

In addition, Russia has increased the number of its deployed nuclear warheads for the fourth consecutive year. The number of warheads deployed on delivery systems has reached its highest level in nine years.
