Negotiations between the United States and Iran have moved close to completion, but US President Donald Trump has decided to revise certain provisions of the future agreement, according to Axios.
According to a senior administration official and a second source familiar with the matter, Trump put forward new demands after reviewing the draft agreement reached by US officials during contacts with the Iranian side.
As two US officials noted, the president wants to conclude a deal soon but aims to make it tougher on several issues he considers critical.
According to Axios sources, Trump’s main concerns relate to provisions on Iran's nuclear program.
The current draft obliges Iran not to develop nuclear weapons and opens a 60-day window for negotiations on limiting Tehran's nuclear activities and potential easing of US sanctions.
One of the key points concerns Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium and further restrictions on its production.
"It's more specifics about how the US gets the material and the timing," a senior administration official said, referring to enriched uranium.
In addition, the US president proposed revising certain formulations related to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite Washington’s additional demands, US officials believe the deal remains close to completion.
A White House official said the US side is prepared to wait as long as necessary to secure a document that meets all of the president’s requirements.
According to sources, the Iranian side will need several days to respond to the new proposals.
Earlier, media reports suggested that the US and Iran had nearly reached a framework agreement providing for a 60-day ceasefire, the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and the start of negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
At the same time, Trump continued to pressure Tehran, saying he was ready to resume strikes if Washington's conditions were not met. Key US demands include opening the Strait of Hormuz and a complete renunciation of Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons.
