US President Donald Trump has announced that China will join Washington's efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking with journalists aboard the plane, Trump said that the issue of Ukraine "came up very strongly" during his meeting with Xi Jinping, and that they "talked about it for a long time." According to him, Xi will help the United States in bringing peace to Ukraine.
"We're both going to work together to see if we can get something done. We agree that the sides are locked in and fighting, and sometimes you have to let them fight, I guess. Crazy. But he's going to help us and we're going to work together on Ukraine," said the US President.
At the same time, Trump noted that the leaders might not be able to accomplish much.
"He's been buying oil from Russia for a long time. It takes care of a big part of China. You know, I can say India's been very good on that front, but we didn't discuss the oil. We discussed working together to see if we could get that war finished," Trump said.
The American leader also added that although the war in Ukraine doesn't directly affect either China or the United States, he would like "to see it done."
"I don't like to see six, seven, eight thousand young people, for the most part soldiers, be killed," he said.
Trump also remarked that Washington is making money off the war in Ukraine, referring to European countries buying US weapons for Ukraine through the PURL program.
"We send weapons to NATO. They buy at full price. They give them to whoever, but I think they give them probably to Ukraine for the most part," Trump said, adding once again that China and the US will try to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
Earlier, Xi Jinping praised Trump ahead of the summit, highlighting his contribution to ending the war in Gaza. The Chinese leader also proposed joining forces to resolve global conflicts.
As reported, Trump and Xi met on October 30 in South Korea to discuss easing tensions between their countries and ways to end the war in Ukraine.
