Donald Trump has been re-elected as President of the United States. However, his victory could pose challenges for Canada and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to Reuters.

The agency writes that Trump’s return to the White House on January 20, 2025, could bring economic challenges and force Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau to make tough decisions. Republicans once labeled Trudeau a “far-left lunatic.”

According to analysts and economists, potential consequences include trade demands that could push Canada into recession, given that 75% of its exports go to the United States, along with an increase in the flow of thousands of people heading north across the US-Canada border.

Trump’s victory adds to Trudeau’s challenges, as polls suggest he is likely to lose to his conservative opponent in the upcoming election within the year.

Reuters notes that the slowing growth of Canada’s economy and the rapid rise in the cost of living over the past few years are key issues in the election campaign, which is happening amid diplomatic tensions with China and India that complicate efforts to diversify trade.

Canada, the world’s fourth-largest crude oil producer, is particularly vulnerable to Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on all imports and his promise to ramp up energy production in the US.

Laura Dawson of the Future Borders Coalition, which seeks to facilitate bilateral trade and travel, stated that the real issue would be the gradual erosion of investor confidence in America’s northern neighbor.

“For Canada, four years of a Trump presidency could be very long indeed,” she said.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland sought to reassure Canadians when asked about Trump’s victory on Wednesday.

“A lot of Canadians were anxious throughout the night and I want to say ... that Canada will be absolutely fine. We have a strong relationship with the United States, we have a strong relationship with President Trump and his team,” she said.

However, in January, Trudeau told reporters that another Trump presidency would be “a step back” that would complicate life for Canada.

Reuters recalled that in 2022, Trump called Trudeau a “far-left lunatic” for requiring truck drivers crossing the border to be vaccinated against COVID. Earlier, in June 2018, the Republican walked out of the G7 summit in Quebec, criticizing the Canadian leader as “very dishonest and weak.”

Trudeau spoke with Trump

It was reported a few hours ago that a phone conversation took place between Justin Trudeau and Donald Trump. The Canadian Prime Minister congratulated the Republican on his election victory, and the two discussed the partnership between their countries.
