Trump’s team holds discussions with White House and Ukrainian officials about ending war - NBC
The team of US President-elect Donald Trump is in talks with the White House and Ukrainian officials on ways to end the war with Russia, NBC News reports.
Sources indicate that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has held several conversations with his successor, Mike Waltz. They discussed current information, but so far have not touched on a strategy for ending the war or securing a ceasefire.
An unnamed senior official in US President Joe Biden's administration noted that such talks allow Trump's team not to be caught off guard by any actions the White House may take on Ukraine before the new president's inauguration.
"Trump is really serious about wanting to get to a ceasefire on day one," NBC News quoted one of the sources as saying.
According to the outlet's interlocutors, recent contacts between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump, and their advisors have been constructive.
"The atmosphere thus far in terms of the engagement between the Ukrainians and the incoming Trump team, including Zelenskyy and Trump himself, has been positive," another source told reporters.
NBC News also writes that Trump likely understands that Ukrainians are not an obstacle to establishing peace, with the problem lying in the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the same time, journalist sources revealed that Trump's team has not presented Ukraine with any conceptual or concrete peace plan.
Trump aims to end the war
During his election campaign, US President-elect Donald Trump declared his intention to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
In September, he promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that he aimed to achieve a "fair deal for everybody."
Recently, Trump held talks with Zelenskyy in Paris. According to Reuters, during the negotiations, the Ukrainian president emphasized the need for security guarantees for Ukraine.
