New details of Zelenskyy and Trump's meeting in Paris uncovered
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used the meeting in Paris with the 47th US President, Donald Trump, to explain Ukraine's need for security guarantees in the context of ending the full-scale war with Russia, Reuters reports.
According to the media sources, the conversation between Zelenskyy, Trump, and French leader Emmanuel Macron lasted for 35 minutes and did not include specific details about any vision for peace. Meanwhile, the 47th President of the United States reiterated his desire for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue on ending the war.
Another source noted that Trump "behaved in a friendly, respectful, and open manner and appeared to be in listening mode."
"Some key points were mentioned during the meeting – for example, it was said that peace needs guarantees because a ceasefire alone isn't enough, Putin could break it again, as he has done before, without proper guarantees," a source in Ukraine's Presidential office said.
Other unnamed officials close to Trump explained that the Republican is currently focusing his meetings on building personal relationships.
Overall, Zelenskyy and Macron were on the same page at the Paris meeting and did not try to corner Trump.
Another official shared that the Ukrainian and French presidents also explained to the Republican that Putin in 2024 is no longer the same as he was in 2017 during Trump's previous presidency.
"The same official added that the rapid fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the setback that has dealt to his close ally Russia was also used as an argument for a tougher stance on Moscow in future peace efforts," Reuters wrote.
Trump and Zelenskyy's meeting in Paris
On December 7, an official ceremony was held in Paris to reopen Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral following the 2019 fire. Zelenskyy and Trump were among those invited to the event. Later, a trilateral meeting of Ukraine, France, and the United States leaders took place at the Elysee Palace.
As the President of Ukraine stated, the meeting was "good and productive," and peace through strength is possible.
