A new personnel decision has been announced in the United States that could influence future diplomatic efforts in the Middle East and other regions, involving expanded responsibilities for a key figure in previous international negotiations, according to Politico.

US President Donald Trump said he intends to appoint his son-in-law Jared Kushner as a special peace envoy.

The announcement was made during a public event known as the Peace Council, attended by dozens of world leaders. Trump said Kushner would focus on negotiating new diplomatic agreements.

The US president praised Kushner’s experience in his first administration and highlighted his role in Middle East diplomacy, including involvement in preparations for the Abraham Accords.

"Very smart guy. We’re making Jared also an envoy of peace. They’re both envoys of peace, and I tell you what. I watch these guys, I say, at least we’re covered from an IQ standpoint," Trump said of Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who is already a special envoy.

During his previous time in the White House, Kushner served as a senior adviser and played a key role in several diplomatic initiatives. The new appointment effectively formalises his responsibility for advancing peace agreements.

Trump has also acknowledged that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine proved more complex than he initially expected, saying the conflict requires greater political and diplomatic effort than anticipated.

The US president recently signed a decision extending for another year the sanctions regime imposed on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, keeping existing restrictions fully in force.
