NATO positively assesses the fact that United States President Donald Trump has begun to restore communication between the White House and the Kremlin, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated during a conversation with journalists.

According to Rutte, he is pleased that Trump has taken a leading role in negotiations on the war in Ukraine and has broken the deadlock. He added that the US administration is actively involved in this process and is closely coordinating its actions with European partners and Ukraine.

"Till January, there were no discussions with the Russians. I think the positive thing is that President Trump has started to open lines of communication with the Russian President. Of course, you hope for results as soon as possible, but it is not always possible in real life because this is a complex conflict," the Secretary General said.

Trump's call with Putin and Zelenskyy

On May 19, Donald Trump held phone conversations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He spoke with Zelenskyy twice - before his call with Putin, and then again afterward.

Following the talks, the US President stated that Russia and Ukraine must sit down for negotiations to halt hostilities and bring the armed conflict to an end.
