Trump reacts for the first time to UK’s plan to recognize Palestine

The US has a "disagreement" with the UK over recognizing Palestine as a state. However, Washington agrees that peace must be established in the region, said US President Donald Trump during a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Starmer noted that he discussed the recognition of Palestine with Trump in a private meeting. Both sides agreed on the "need for peace and a road map, because the situation in Gaza is intolerable."
The British Prime Minister stated that Israeli hostages must be released, but more aid should be sent to Gaza. He also said that US and UK leaders are currently working on a peace plan, and recognition of Palestine should be considered in that context.
Trump, however, took a much tougher stance on Palestine. The US President demands the immediate release of hostages still held by Hamas, calling their treatment in captivity shocking.
"We want it to end. We have to have the hostages back immediately. That’s what the people of Israel want," Trump said.
He added that it is important to remember October 7, one of the worst and most brutal days in world history.
Regarding the recognition of Palestine, Trump confirmed that there are differences between London and Washington on this issue.
"I have a disagreement with the Prime Minister on that score. One of our few disagreements, actually," he said.
Recognition of Palestine: what we know
Back in July, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country plans to recognize Palestine as a state. This was the first such statement from a European leader.
Following Macron, Keir Starmer expressed similar intentions in July. However, Britain’s approach is slightly different - according to London, this could be a response to Israel’s refusal to halt military actions in the region.
