Expectations for the outcome of negotiations
US President Donald Trump said that it will soon become clear whether talks with Iran will succeed.
According to him, an assessment of the situation may be possible within 24 hours after the start of key consultations.
"We’re going to find out in about 24 hours. We’re going to know soon," Trump said.
Preparation for possible escalation
At the same time, Washington is preparing for a negative scenario. The president noted that US Navy ships are being equipped with new weapons in case diplomacy fails.
"We have a reset going. We’re loading up the ships with the best ammunition, the best weapons ever made — even better than what we did previously, and we blew them apart," he said.
Trump also stressed that if no agreement is reached, the US military will effectively use all the weapons and ammunition loaded onto the ships.
Talks in Pakistan
A US delegation led by Vice President J.D. Vance is already heading to Islamabad. The negotiations will also include special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
On the Iranian side, participation is expected from Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Key conditions of the sides
Among the main issues are Iran’s transfer of significant stocks of enriched uranium, the restoration of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, restrictions on the missile program, and the cessation of support for allied forces in the region. Tehran, for its part, insists on lifting sanctions.
Trump’s statements on Iran
Donald Trump also expressed doubts about Iran’s intentions.
"You’re dealing against people that we don’t know whether or not they tell the truth," he said. "To our face, they’re getting rid of all nuclear weapons, everything’s gone. And then they go out to the press and say, ‘No, we’d like to enrich.’ So we’ll find out."
On the Truth Social platform, the president added, "They (the Iranians - ed.) don't seem to understand that they have no cards in hand except for short-term blackmail of the world through international waterways. The only reason they are alive is to negotiate!"
US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to reports that Iran may introduce a fee for tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, issuing a stern warning to Tehran.
The ceasefire regime between the US and Iran is under threat after new statements from Tehran: Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called the truce "irrational" and accused Washington of failing to comply with three of the ten conditions it had set.
