US President Donald Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Trump said with the journalists.

"It's going to happen, but it should have happened three months ago," Trump said about the trilateral meeting.

Zelenskyy–Putin meeting

During the third round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, the Ukrainian delegation once again proposed a meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Putin. However, the Kremlin once again ignored the proposal and instead began talking about preconditions for such a meeting.

Interestingly, during the first round of talks in May this year, Zelenskyy had also suggested a personal meeting with Putin in Istanbul. At that time, Ukraine received no response either.

Despite this, Zelenskyy still traveled to Istanbul, where he waited for Putin. At one point, media outlets began reporting that a possible trilateral meeting between Zelenskyy, Putin, and Trump could take place.

Trump, who was in the Middle East at the time, initially said he might travel to Türkiye if peace talks were to happen. But after Putin failed to show up in Istanbul, Trump said that nothing would happen until he met with Putin.

Rumors of a Trump–Putin meeting

Earlier, The Times reported that Chinese leader Xi Jinping had invited Donald Trump to a military parade in Beijing in September to mark the end of World War II. Russian leader Vladimir Putin is also expected to attend the event.

According to the outlet, Xi Jinping may organize a trilateral meeting between Trump and Putin.

The Kremlin has also stated that Putin could meet with Trump if he travels to China.

Meanwhile, Valerii Klochok, head of the Center for Public Analytics Vezha and chairman of the charitable foundation Nova Doroha, told RBC-Ukraine’s YouTube channel that, as of now, there are no real preconditions for a Trump–Putin meeting.
