US President Donald Trump expressed cautious optimism about reaching a peace agreement during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to his Mar-a-Lago club, according to the New York Post.
Trump said he is cautiously optimistic about finalizing a peace deal during Zelenskyy’s visit to his club.
He noted that while there is a chance of reaching an agreement, the negotiations remain challenging due to differences between the parties.
According to him, Ukraine and Russia are seeking a peaceful resolution, but so far are proceeding cautiously.
Kyiv’s new plan
The Ukrainian side brought a 20-point peace plan, based on an earlier 28-point proposal prepared by Trump’s team.
Key elements include the creation of a demilitarized free economic zone.
Russia’s reaction remains restrained, with its main demand being that Ukraine cede part of the Donetsk region. The Kremlin has confirmed that dialogue will continue.
Overcoming obstacles
The US president has not yet endorsed Zelenskyy’s plan and awaits a final review of the proposals. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy said he is willing to hold a referendum to approve territorial concessions if it is part of a peace settlement.
In recent months, negotiations have faced difficulties, including the resignation of Ukraine’s key adviser Andrii Yermak and Moscow’s refusal to engage in direct talks.
Context and setting of the meeting
Zelenskyy’s visit to Mar-a-Lago differs from the usual official meetings at the White House. Donald Trump often uses such events to exert informal influence on his guests.
Previously, the venue hosted meetings with world leaders, often accompanied by displays of diplomatic and military power.
US President Donald Trump commented on the upcoming visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with his proposed peace plan, emphasizing that the Ukrainian leader would not be able to advance his initiatives until they receive approval from the US side.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready to hold a referendum on the US-proposed peace plan, but only if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.
