Former US President and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump held his first outdoor rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday. For security purposes, the politician addressed the public from behind a massive bulletproof glass, reports AP.

Trump spoke from a podium surrounded by bulletproof glass, which formed a protective wall across the stage. Large industrial containers were placed nearby, creating the effect of additional walls and blocking lines of sight.

A sniper team was positioned on the roof of the venue behind the podium, where old planes were stationed, and a large American flag was hung on cranes around the perimeter of the meeting site.

In his address, the former US president called Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention "nasty" and added that he tries to be kind to people, "but it’s a little tough when they get personal."

Trump then mocked Kamala Harris once again, calling her "the most radical left person ever to run for high political office in our country," and added that this woman, whom he now calls "Comrade Kamala," will destroy the country if elected to the White House.

After attacking his opponents, the Republican continued to address national security issues, sharing his views on NATO, the US failure in Afghanistan, and actions regarding Russia.

AP notes that Trump's trip is an attempt by his team to counter the Democratic National Convention and to compete with Harris for voter support in some key states.

Attempted assassination of Trump and increased security measures

On July 13, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire during Trump's meeting with his supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania. The former U.S. president was wounded in the ear, and Secret Service agents neutralized the shooter.

Following the assassination attempt, the US Secret Service faced criticism for failing to protect the Republican presidential candidate. Later, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on July 23.

Later, CNN reported that the Secret Service plans to enhance security measures following the assassination attempt on Trump. Specifically, they planned to increase the number of agents guarding the Republican candidate and install bulletproof glass during his speeches.
