US Secret Service chief resigns over failure to protect Trump
US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has decided to resign. She took responsibility for the failed protection of former President Donald Trump, who was recently shot at, according to The Guardian and the White House press service.
In a letter to staff, Cheatle emphasized that the mission of the Secret Service is to protect US leaders and financial infrastructure. However, on July 13, when Trump was assassinated, this task was not accomplished.
"As your director, I take full responsibility for the security lapse." she said.
According to the official, she does not want calls for her resignation to distract the US Secret Service staff from the great work they do every day.
"In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director," Cheatle added.
By the way, Cheatle has held the position of Director of the US Secret Service since August 2022.
Biden's reaction
In his statement, US President Joe Biden highlighted that Kim Cheatle had devoted her life to protecting the American nation and had risked it.
"As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service," Biden noted.
He also added that he is awaiting the results of an independent review into the attempted assassination of Trump.
"I wish Kim all the best, and I will plan to appoint a new Director soon," the President added.
Attempt on Trump's life
On July 13, during a rally in Pennsylvania, a man fired several shots at former US President Donald Trump. One of the bullets wounded his ear.
As a result of the shooting one person died and several were injured among the Americans who had come to support Trump.
The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was neutralized on the spot by US Secret Service personnel. He was a Republican voter.
Yesterday, July 22, Kimberly Cheatle admitted that there was a failure in Trump’s protection but refused to resign.
