Likelihood of new negotiations
As reported by The New York Post, US President Donald Trump confirmed the possibility of a meeting in the near future.
"It’s possible!" he said in response to journalists’ questions about a potential breakthrough in relations with Tehran.
Sources in Islamabad report that a new round of talks could take place within the next 36–72 hours.
Pakistan is currently acting as a key mediator, working through diplomatic channels to develop a unified plan from the Iranian leadership.
Ceasefire regime
A ceasefire remains in place between the sides, despite heightened rhetoric. US forces remain on alert and continue a blockade until the talks are concluded.
"I have … directed our Military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other," Donald Trump said.
According to the Pakistani side, no military escalation has been recorded at this stage, which suggests that both sides intend to seek a diplomatic solution.
Trump’s ultimatum and expectations of a response
Earlier, Donald Trump stated that a deal with Iran would be impossible if the US agreed to lift the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz before documents were signed. According to him, the blockade is the main leverage over Tehran.
In addition, according to sources cited by Axios, the US expects Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, to deliver a final response to the American proposals for settlement as early as Wednesday, April 22. The process is being slowed by an internal conflict between the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and civilian politicians.
The US President also warned of serious consequences if the negotiations fail. Trump noted that if the ceasefire ends without results, "lots of bombs" will start exploding, hinting at a large-scale military escalation.
