US President Donald Trump is reportedly likely to lift restrictions on strikes using American long-range weapons on Russian territory. In addition, his administration is considering providing Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Lifting restrictions on strikes

According to sources cited by the outlet, Trump informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of his willingness to lift restrictions on strikes using long-range weapons against Russia. This was reported to the Wall Street Journal by senior US and Ukrainian officials.

During an informal discussion at the UN, Zelenskyy asked Trump to provide more long-range missiles and to allow their use against the aggressor country. Trump responded that he was not opposed to the idea but did not make any commitments to lift the US ban on such attacks.

For several months, the Trump administration had blocked Ukraine from using US-supplied long-range missiles for strikes on Russia. These include the ATACMS tactical missile systems, which Kyiv had complained were necessary to effectively counter Moscow.

Ukrainian officials are set to travel to Washington next week for talks with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Along with his policy deputy, Elbridge Colby, he oversees Kyiv’s requests to strike Russian targets with US weapons.

Tomahawks for Ukraine

During their meeting in New York, the president of Ukraine asked his American counterpart to provide Tomahawk cruise missiles, capable of striking at ranges of 900 to 1,500 miles. The Trump administration is considering supplying these missiles, as well as other long‑range weapons.

Senior US and European officials familiar with the plans told the Wall Street Journal about this.

So far, the White House and the Pentagon have not responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Ukraine has repeatedly raised the issue of Tomahawk deliveries over the past year. Kyiv included them in the list of weapons it requested several months ago.

Former US President Joe Biden had refused to provide Tomahawks to Ukraine. They were part of Zelenskyy’s 10‑point plan for victory. The move was judged too risky because the missiles could reach Moscow, which could have led to an escalation of the conflict.
