The US held negotiations on postwar security guarantees for Ukraine. However, they collapsed after President Donald Trump struck a diesel deal with President Vladimir Putin, The Telegraph reports.

During talks in Miami last weekend, US President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner indicated that Trump could strengthen his offer of security guarantees for Ukraine.

The main goal was to prevent a new Russian invasion as part of an updated peace plan.

The US side was trying to find a compromise on the difficult territorial issue that would satisfy both Kyiv and its European partners.

However, the prospects for reaching an agreement deteriorated after Trump agreed to lift sanctions restrictions on the import of hundreds of thousands of barrels of diesel fuel to Russia as part of a deal with Putin.

Senior EU official Björn Seibert, who took part in the meeting in Miami, admitted that the diesel deal came as a surprise to the participants in the negotiations.

Before the news emerged, the Ukrainian delegation and European representatives, including the British Prime Minister’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, had been discussing possible solutions concerning territory, security guarantees, and Ukraine’s prospects for joining the European Union.

According to the outlet, US representatives offered Kyiv expanded security guarantees, hoping to make progress on the issue of territories under Russian occupation. The specific terms of these guarantees remained unclear.

However, they were reportedly intended to go beyond Trump’s previously stated promise to involve US aircraft in patrolling Ukrainian airspace and provide satellite intelligence to deter a new Russian invasion.

According to an insider, Zelenskyy’s team generally welcomed the revised proposal. Despite this, representatives of all three sides left Miami without reaching an agreement, as Trump’s decision effectively derailed it.

Meanwhile, media reports also say that Trump is now very "p***** off" and may halt intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

And in the US Senate, lawmakers are demanding that the president stop and cancel the deal with Putin before it is too late.
