Twelve US senators from both parties have sent a letter to President Donald Trump demanding that he cancel the controversial deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a statement on the website of Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal.

The appeal to the White House chief was signed by six Democrats: Richard Blumenthal, Chris Coons, Dick Durbin, Jack Reed, Jeanne Shaheen and Sheldon Whitehouse.

Six Republicans also signed the letter: Alan Armstrong, Susan Collins, John Cornyn, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis.

The senators pointed out that allowing Russia to freely sell its own diesel fuel on global markets is not only harmful to US security interests but also amounts to a public betrayal of Ukraine and its entire people.

"This deal is a gift to our adversary and a betrayal of our Allies; it should be rescinded," the letter’s authors urged Trump.

In addition, the senators called on the White House chief to immediately impose sanctions authorized by the recently adopted Lindsey Graham Act.

"These authorities require you to apply economic pressure on Russia and the chief enablers of its war, in particular China, and thereby enhance your negotiating position to bring a swift end to this ruinous conflict," the authors of the appeal stressed.

Against the backdrop of recent developments, the senators reminded Trump that peace in Ukraine must be achieved on fair terms, with guarantees to protect the country’s democratic values, sovereignty and security.

The letter’s authors stressed that the US must be a bastion of freedom against tyranny, not an accomplice of the tyrant Putin.

"Withdraw from this agreement, rescind General License No. 135, and execute the authorities provided under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026," the senators demanded of Trump.

It also emerged that Trump had begun shifting the blame onto Europe following the controversial deal with Putin.
