Trump declares May 8 Victory Day, stresses his peacemaker mission

US President Donald Trump has officially proclaimed May 8 as Victory Day over Nazism in World War II, while reaffirming his primary mission in office - the mission of a peacemaker, according to the White House.
The White House published a proclamation signed by Trump, stating that the US will mark the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over National Socialism and fascism, and the end of World War II in Europe.
"I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 8, 2025, as a day in celebration of Victory Day for World War II," the proclamation reads.
The President emphasized that on May 8, the US will honor all those who fought against Nazism during the war.
"On this Victory Day for World War II, we celebrate the unmatched might, strength, and power of the American Armed Forces, and we commit to protecting our sacred birthright of liberty against all threats, foreign and domestic," the proclamation states.
The document also notes the toll of American lives in the war - over 250,000 US service members died fighting the Nazi regime. Without those sacrifices, it states, "this war would not have been won, and our world today would look drastically different."
The legacy of a peacemaker
In the proclamation, Trump reiterated his commitment to his core mission as President — being a global peacemaker. He said the millions of senseless deaths during World War II remain a reminder of why the United States must pursue peace through strength.
"I remain steadfastly devoted to stopping the years of endless foreign wars and preventing the further loss of lives. As I stated during my Inaugural Address, we will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars we end — and my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker," the President emphasized.
Trump is a peacemaker
In his inaugural address as President, Trump pledged to rebuild the strongest military the world has ever seen. But he emphasized that his success would be measured not just by the battles won, but by the wars ended.
Trump said he hopes to be remembered as "a peacemaker and a unifier," while building "the strongest military the world has ever seen."
