Greenland must eliminate the threat posed by Russia, which NATO has been warning Copenhagen about for nearly 20 years, US President Donald Trump said in his post.

"NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that 'you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.' Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it," Trump said.

The US president also stressed that the time has now come to change this, and that the Russian threat will be eliminated.

Trump supports transferring Greenland to US control to deploy elements of the Golden Dome missile defense system there. He warns that without a swift response from NATO, the strategically important island could fall under the influence of Russia or China.

According to the US side, the United States is forced to take on a leading role because its European allies do not demonstrate sufficient readiness to defend critical regions.

The idea of purchasing or establishing control over Greenland is not new and has been discussed by US administrations for more than a hundred years. The island is viewed as an important element of US national security.

At the same time, in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, a noticeable increase in demand for survival goods and long-shelf-life food products has been observed. Local residents, responding to statements from the United States, are expressing concern about possible external threats to the island.

Also yesterday, January 18, the US Department of the Treasury said that Washington's interest in Greenland is driven by strategic considerations and a weakening of Europe's role in matters of collective security.
