Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that he had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump. However, he did not mention whether the discussion included India’s rejection of Russian oil, according to Modi’s post on X, that no reference to Russian oil was made.

"Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement," Modi emphasized.

He also stated that when two major economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits both nations and creates significant opportunities for mutually advantageous cooperation.

"President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity. India fully supports his efforts for peace," Modi stated.

Modi added that he looked forward to working closely with Trump to take the partnership to an unprecedented level. However, he did not say anything about refusing to purchase Russian oil.

Background

Earlier, on Monday, February 2, US President Donald Trump claimed that he had reached an agreement with India to stop buying Russian oil, saying it would help end the war in Ukraine. Trump stated that India had agreed to halt purchases of Russian oil and to buy significantly more oil from the US and possibly Venezuela, which he argued would contribute to ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where thousands of people die each week.

Previously, it was reported that due to US sanctions and pressure from Washington, Indian refineries had begun adjusting their oil procurement strategies.
