US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with India to halt purchases of oil from Russia. According to him, this will help stop the war in Ukraine, according to Trump’s post on Truth Social.
He said that on February 2, he discussed trade and ending the war between Ukraine and Russia with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"He agreed to stop buying Russian oil, and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela. This will help end the war in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!" Trump wrote.
He added that he agreed with Modi on a trade deal between the US and India, which takes effect immediately. Under the deal, the United States will apply a reduced mutual tariff of 18% instead of 25%.
Additionally, Trump noted that India will reduce its tariffs and non-tariff barriers against the US to zero.
Reduction of oil supplies to India
As of December last year, there was a trend of declining oil supplies from Russia to India. They amounted to approximately 1.2 million barrels per day, reaching a three-year low, and in January the figure fell further, to an average of 1.12 million barrels per day.
Moreover, in December 2025, Russia faced a significant drop in crude oil production. At the same time, total Russian oil exports fell to their lowest level since August 2025, partly due to reduced imports by India. Currently, only China remains a major market for Russian oil.
Under US sanctions and pressure from Washington, Indian refineries are adjusting their oil purchasing strategies.
In particular, India plans to buy more oil from Middle Eastern countries and the US. Oil purchases from Latin American countries, primarily Venezuela, are also under consideration.
